Fall in the Lowcountry

How to Heat Your Pool & Protect Your Equipment This Fall

One of the great things about autumn on Hilton Head Island is that even though it brings cooler breezes and lower humidity, your swimming season does not have to end. Fall in the Lowcountry offers some of the absolute best weather of the year for enjoying your outdoor living space, provided your pool water is warm and your pool is in good working order, this season could turn out to be your favorite!

To help you get the most out of your backyard oasis this season, we’ve put together a guide on how to extend your swimming season well into the cooler months while keeping your pump and filtration system running smoothly.

Maximizing Your Pool Season: Why Fall is the Best Time to Heat Your Pool

When the ambient air temperature drops into the 60s and 70s, pool water temperatures follow quickly, dropping into uncomfortable territory. Adding or optimizing a pool heating system allows you to stretch your pool use through late fall, or even year-round.

Choosing the Right Heater for Your Lowcountry Home

Depending on how you use your pool, there are three primary heating options to consider:

  • Heat Pumps (Electric): Ideal for our mild coastal climate. Heat pumps pull warmth directly from the surrounding air and transfer it to your pool water. They are exceptionally energy-efficient for maintaining a consistent, comfortable temperature throughout the fall.

  • Gas Heaters (Natural Gas or Propane): The fastest option on the market. Gas heaters excel at warming up a pool or attached spa quickly on demand, making them perfect for homeowners who only want to heat their pool on weekends or for special gatherings.

  • Heat/Cool Pumps (Chillers): A dual-function investment. These units chill your water during the scorching mid-summer heatwaves and heat it during the autumn chill, ensuring your pool stays at the perfect temperature 365 days a year.

You can pair your pool heater with a solar cover or thermal blanket at night. In the fall, most heat loss occurs overnight due to evaporation into the cooler night air. Covering your pool traps that heat and significantly lowers your energy bill.

Managing Falling Leaves & Organic Debris

While autumn foliage is beautiful, falling oak leaves, pine needles, and Spanish moss pose a serious threat to your pool's filtration and pump system if left unchecked. When organic debris builds up, it can restrict water flow, cause equipment strain, and throw off your water chemistry.  Protecting your pool equipment during this season is important.

1. Empty Skimmer and Pump Baskets Frequently

Leaves enter the pool and drift toward the skimmer baskets. If these baskets become clogged, water flow to your pump is restricted, forcing the motor to work harder, overheat, or run dry. Make it a habit to empty both your pool wall skimmers and the pump basket at least two to three times a week during peak leaf season.

2. Skim Debris Before It Sinks

Organic matter left floating on the surface will eventually sink to the bottom. As leaves decompose at the bottom of your pool, they consume available free chlorine, stain the plaster or finish, and can clog the main drain. Use a heavy-duty leaf rake or net to catch debris while it's still floating.

3. Keep an Eye on Filter Pressure

As fine debris works its way past the baskets and into your pool filter (whether cartridge, sand, or D.E.), system pressure will increase. Check your pressure gauge weekly. A pressure reading 8 to 10 PSI higher than your starting clean pressure indicates it’s time to backwash or clean your filter elements.

4. Trim Back Overhanging Branches

A little preventive landscaping goes a long way. Pruning back trees and shrubs that hang directly over the pool deck reduces the amount of organic material dropping into the water before it ever becomes a problem.
