Chlorine doesn't just disappear into thin air; high temperatures and bright sunlight actively destroy it through two distinct mechanisms.

1. UV Intensity and Photo-Degradation

Unstabilized chlorine is extremely sensitive to sunlight. Direct ultraviolet (UV) rays break down free chlorine molecules through a process called photo-degradation. On an August afternoon in Hilton Head, intense sun exposure can destroy up to 90% of a pool’s free chlorine in just two hours if cyanuric acid (stabilizer) levels aren’t strictly balanced.

2. Thermal Degradation and Bather Load

  3. Shock at Night: Always perform heavy oxidation treatments after sunset. This gives the shock all night to break down contaminants without competing against direct UV rays.
