Why is pool chemistry critical?

Achieving Proper Pool Chemistry Ensures Safety

Achieving the right pool chemistry for your pool is critical to safety for several reasons. Understanding all the reasons and learning how to achieve the right chemistry can be daunting which is why many pool owners decide to outsource their pool cleaning and maintenance services to a professional pool company.

At Hardwick Pools, we service residential pools with routine cleaning and maintenance on Hilton Head Island. We understand the value and importance of your pool chemistry and our professional and reliable team ensures you have the proper chemistry during their regular checks.

 Why is pool chemistry important?

If you are a pool owner, you likely know that pool chemistry is vital to the health of your swimmers. Here are the reasons why:

  • Sanitization stops pathogens: A proper free chlorine (or alternative sanitizer) level destroys bacteria, viruses, and algae that can cause skin infections, gastrointestinal illness, or respiratory symptoms. Without enough sanitizer, swimmers are at risk for all of these nasty things!

  • Algae and cloudy water reduce visibility and safety: Algae growth and cloudy water mask hazards, increase slipperiness, and necessitate stronger chemical use that can irritate skin and eyes. Balanced chemistry keeps water clear and safe to swim in.

  • Skin and eye irritation prevention: Incorrect pH or high salinity can irritate eyes, skin, and mucous membranes. Maintaining pH in the recommended range and stable alkalinity helps prevent stinging eyes and itchy skin.

  • Respiratory and immune considerations: Poorly balanced water can release chloramines when chlorine combines with organics (sweat, sunscreen). Chloramines cause eye/ throat irritation and may aggravate asthma or allergies. Proper mixing, filtration, and shocking reduce chloramine levels

  • Corrosion and material safety: Low pH or low TA can corrode pool surfaces, metal fixtures, and equipment, creating sharp edges or leaks that pose physical hazards and costly repairs. Balanced chemistry protects both health and infrastructure.

  • Safety for vulnerable swimmers: Young children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems are more susceptible to waterborne illness. Consistent chemistry reduces their risk and increases their confidence in safe swimming.

  • Consistency reduces risk: Regular testing and maintenance prevent small imbalances from becoming big safety issues. A routine that checks free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, stabilizer (CYA), calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid helps ensure a stable, safe environment.

Taking care of your pool is a critical step in pool ownership and achieving the right pool chemistry is one of the most important.

Here are some practical safety tips for pool owners and how Hardwick Pools on Hilton Head Island can help with your cleaning and maintenance to ensure swimmer’s safety.

  • We recommend that water should be tested once to twice weekly in season and adjusted promptly.  At Hardwick Pools, our team will send you chemical readings and adjustments in our post-visit email report when you are a client of our routine pool cleaning and maintenance services.

  • Maintaining pH in the appropriate window to minimize irritation and maximize sanitizer effectiveness is paramount. Hardwick Pools’ professional maintenance team is here to help you maintain the correct pH and keep your swimmers safe.

  • You should regularly clean your pool filters and ensure proper circulation to support effective sanitization in your pool. This step is also part of our regular service as part of our 12 step maintenance plan.

  • A pool should only be shocked appropriately after heavy use or contamination events, and re-enter only after FC returns to safe levels. Hardwick Pools will assess if your pool needs a chemical shock and will perform this service as part of our maintenance services. We do not recommend unseasoned pool owners attempting this important task if they not familiar. Leave that to experts like us!

A well-balanced pool isn't just about having crystal-clear water that looks great to swim in, it’s about safeguarding your guests’ and family’s health. Proper pool chemistry helps prevent skin and eye irritation, algae growth, and potential illnesses from waterborne bacteria. Don’t risk it and leave it to the professionals. At Hardwick Pools, we help families on Hilton Head Island enjoy safer swimming by maintaining precise chemical levels, good circulation, and clean surfaces.
